If you’re hunting for the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go then you’re in the right place as we’ve listed ten of the most elusive and difficult-to-catch critters in the mobile game for you. Whether their rarity comes from timed events, region locking, or having a tiny catch rate, we’ve got all the information you need to add these ‘mon to your collection.
Running low on items? Our list of Pokémon Go codes can help, so make sure you check it out once you’re done here. We’ve also got tons of helpful guides to the best ice Pokémon, poison Pokémon, fairy Pokémon, and grass Pokémon in Pokémon Go for you to peruse.
These are ten of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go:
Armored Mewtwo
Pokémon Go’s Mewtwo is already one of the harder psychic Pokémon to come across in the game, but Armored Mewtwo is on a whole other level. In the mobile game’s long history, Armored Mewtwo has only appeared twice – once in special raids in 2019, and again in February 2020 to celebrate Pokémon Day.
Unless Armored Mewtwo makes a miraculous return sometime soon, the only way to get one for yourself is by trading with a friend who has a spare. Another thing that makes this Mewtwo special is that although it’s technically a form of costume Pokémon, it’s the only one in the game with a different move set and stats to its regular form.
Clone Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu
These special versions of the Kanto starter Pokémon would be incredible additions to any Pokédex, if only they weren’t so hard to get. I’m sorry to say that unless you have a very generous friend or a time machine, you won’t be adding them to your box any time soon.
Niantic released these four clone versions of the starters for Pokémon Day 2020 to celebrate the release of Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution, a remake of the very first Pokémon movie. They haven’t appeared since and we doubt they will again before a huge celebration like Pokémon’s 30th anniversary.
Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf
These three adorable mythical Pokémon have extremely unique encounter and catch conditions, so even if you’re able to find one of them, collecting all three of the Lake Guardians could take you years. Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf are the only legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Go to spawn in the wild without using items or during a special event, but their spawn rates are incredibly low.
What’s more, each of the Lake Guardians is region-locked, so you’ll need to do some globe-trotting or get trading to complete the trio. You can find Uxie in the Asia and Pacific regions, Mesprit in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India, and Azelf lives in the Americas and Greenland.
Dusk Form Lycanroc
Dusk Form Lycanroc is a surprisingly rare dog Pokémon in both Pokémon Go and the mainline games. You likely already have a Lycanroc in your collection, but it’ll either be the brown Midday Form or the red werewolf-style Midnight Form. That’s because to get the Dusk Form of this puppy you need to catch or hatch a specific Rockruff with the ability to evolve into it.
The best way to get this specific Rockruff evolution in Pokémon Go is to keep hatching and catching them until you come across one that can evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc. It’ll take some time and a lot of patience, but at least Rockruff isn’t a timed exclusive Pokémon like some of the others on this list.
Galarian Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos
The Galarian legendary bird trio is probably the closest thing that Pokémon Go has to traditional roaming legendaries, as the only way to encounter these feathery friends is by using your Daily Adventure Incense. Using this item gives you a 15-minute window each day to cover as much ground as possible in the hopes of spawning Galarian Zapdos, Moltres, or Articuno.
The legendary bird Pokémon are still extremely rare spawns when using Daily Adventure Incense, and if you’re lucky enough to find one of them, you still have the difficult task of catching it. At least this challenge gives you an excuse to get out of the house each day for a walk.
Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia
Despite having ‘forme’ in their names, Origin Form Dialga and Palkia are completely separate Pokémon from their regular versions. These ancient beings only appeared in five-star raids in Pokémon Go’s Sinnoh Tour back in February 2024, meaning you need to trade for them or wait for their return to get one for yourself.
Even if you took part in the Sinnoh Tour, these time and space gods were still relatively rare, depending on which branch of the tour you chose. For example, if you chose the Diamond path, getting your hands on an Origin Forme Dialga was fairly simple, but catching a matching Palkia was much rarer.
Zygarde Complete Form
If you play Pokémon Go relatively frequently, you’ll almost certainly have a Zygarde in your Pokédex – but not its Complete Form. Niantic gave out Zygarde’s basic form for free as part of the From A to Zygarde quest, but transforming it into its Complete Form is a lot harder and depends a lot on where you live.
To get Zygarde’s Complete Form, you have to collect Zygarde Cells, which only spawn on Pokémon Go routes. These are user-generated paths for you to follow in your local area which grant you bonuses along the way. If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with active routes, you’ll have to walk them at least 250 times to collect enough cells to transform Zygarde into its Complete Form, and that’s only if a cell spawns on each of your journeys.
Volcarona
This beautiful fire Pokémon is deceptively hard to get in Pokémon Go. You can’t catch them in the wild, and getting one through evolution is surprisingly tricky. This is because, despite the fact you can hatch its pre-evolution, Larvesta, from 2km, 5km, and 10km eggs, it has a ridiculously low hatch rate compared to the other available Pokémon.
Once you actually manage to get your hands on a Larvesta from an egg or through trading, you need a whopping 400 Larvesta candies to transform it into a Volcarona. Given how difficult it is to get a Larvesta in the first place, it’s easier to use rare candies for this, but 400 is such a steep cost to pay.
Rotom
Pokémon Go’s Rotom has traditionally only appeared during Go Fest and Go Tour events – specifically the in-person versions rather than the global ones – as a particularly rare spawn. Wash Rotom, Heat Rotom, Mow Rotom, and Frost Rotom have all spawned during different in-person events, but you could only catch them if they photobombed one of your Go Snapshot photos.
If you had a ticket to Go Tour Sinnoh in 2024, Rotom’s regular form was slightly easier to get as you only needed to redeem a code, but since the event’s end, Rotom and its many forms remain elusive for most players. Fan Rotom still hasn’t made its debut in the game, so we expect to see it at some point during 2025’s event schedule.
Kecleon
Kecleon was the last gen 3 Pokémon to appear in Pokémon Go and, unsurprisingly for a chameleon, it’s very difficult to find. This tricky lizard only spawns on Pokéstops and you have to spin them to knock it off for a chance to catch one for yourself.
It can take quite a while to finally find a Pokéstop with a Kecleon hiding on it, but once you do, make sure you have your best Pokéballs to hand as these sneaky critters love to run away.
